Versailles is a city in the Yvelines departement in the Ile-de-France region, located in the western suburbs of Paris the French capital. It is a wealthy suburb with a service based economy and a major tourist destination. World-widely renowned for its chateau, the Palace of Versailles, it is the meeting place for the Congress of France when voting on revisions to the constitution.
The city’s famous chateau started off as a hunting lodge built in 1624 by Louis XIII but the King converted it to a chateau in 1634. Louis XIV decided that the court and government would be established permanently in Versailles in 1682. By the reign of Louis XV it had become capital of the most powerful kingdom in Europe. However by the end of the French Revolution it was a symbol for the old monarchy and in 1879 the government was relocated to Paris. In 1919, at the end of World War I, it was put in the limelight again as the various treaties ending the war were signed in the castle and in the Grand Trianon. Today the city’s most famous attraction still lures flocks of people all year round.
