Beautiful Lyon sits in the Rhône-Alpes region of France, between Paris and Marseille. The largest French conurbation outside Paris, it is world renowned for its history and architecture, which have led to its UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Evolving from its reputation for producing and weaving silk, it is now famed for its gastronomic delights. Along with its strong cultural identity, the Capital of Lights is also important for scientific and technological industries and banking.
The Rhône and Saône rivers converge at the south of Lyon’s city centre forming a peninsula known as Presqu'île, two hills and a large plain. The medieval portion of the city was built on the west bank of the Saône. This area, along with some of the Presqu'île and a large portion of the Croix-Rousse hill, is what forms the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Most of the population inhabits a large area of land east of the Rhône.
