Montélimar is widely considered to be the world capital of nougat and the nougat produced here is said to be the best in the world. It has been home to many famous French names including Emile Loubet, president of France from 1699 till 1906, Formula One driver Charles Pic, and Louis de Freycinet, who was a navigator. The city has been inhabited by several rulers, all of whom have left their mark. The Romans built a forum, a thermae, aqueducts and a basilica. During the middle ages the Adhémar family ruled the city and built a grand castle, which stills watches over Montélimar to this day.
Montélimar is situated in the Drôme department in the Rhône-Alpes region. It is the second biggest town in Drôme and if the delightful nougat doesn’t win you over the scent of lavender from the surrounding fields most definitely will. The market is vibrant, the locals are welcoming and the sun is always shining.
